A locally owned builder in Northport, working across Leelanau County and Traverse City.

Stephen Hoskins
I own Birch Cove Builders and oversee every project from the first meeting through the final walk-through. Much of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals.
I've loved drawing house plans for as long as I can remember. I started building at 14, renovating my father's 1830s farmhouse in Oakdale, Pennsylvania.
I went on to the University of Vermont and learned the trade working with builders around Burlington and central Vermont. I loved the possibilities and wanted to learn as much as I could. My first job as foreman was a bakery and restaurant with living space above, with a timber-frame roof over energy-efficient framed walls. I built the bakery's wood-fired oven too, and baked there for years.
In 2009 I moved to Leelanau County to renovate an 1830s cabin owned by my wife's family. I kept baking and building, and in 2016 made building my full-time work. Birch Cove has grown a lot since then, but I still oversee every job myself. We use green building best practices wherever we can, and I'm always happy to talk about alternative and natural building methods. I look forward to speaking with you.
A clear process, from the first walk-through to the final details.
- Walk-through. We meet at the site, look at the work and talk through what you want.
- Written proposal. A clear scope and price, so you know what's included before anything starts.
- Build with updates. We coordinate our crew and subcontractors and keep you posted with regular updates and photos.
- Changes in writing. If the plan changes, you see the cost before the work is done.
- Final walk-through. We go over everything together and finish the punch list.
